The Aarhus Convention is at the heart of ensuring environmental democracy by laying down a set of basic procedural rights for the public, imposing obligations on public authorities to make these rights effective, increasing transparency, and making governments more accountable to the people.

On 2 May, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM, Professor Lucila de Almeida will host – within the course of Environmental Law at NOVA School of Law – an open lecture on the Aarhus Convention and the facts and legal background concerning a recent ACCC proceeding regarding the license to the operations of mines in Portugal – ACCC/C/2021/186 Portugal.

Keynote speakers:

  • Warren Gary Lavey, Professor of Natural Resources and Environmental Science in the School of Earth, Society, and Environment at the University of Illinois.
  • Joám Evans Pim, Director of the Center for Global Nonkilling and seasonally teaches at the Program on Peace, Mediation, and Conflict Research (Åbo Akademi University, Finland).

The event is mandatory for Environmental law course students, and NOVA School of Law students are welcome.
